Providing safe drinking water is a highly energy-intensive activity as electricity costs represent up to 60 percent of a water system’s operating budget. More and more systems are recognizing the importance of reducing energy consumption as a means to reduce their bottom line costs. For this reason the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has developed a free, downloadable, Excel-based energy use assessment tool. This tool allows water systems to conduct a utility bill analysis to determine baseline energy consumption and cost. In addition, the tool highlights areas of inefficiency that users may find useful in identifying and prioritizing energy improvement projects

A webinar on how to perform an energy use assessment at small- to medium-sized water and wastewater systems will be held Thursday, May 31, 2012 from 12:30-2:30 p.m. CT. Register for this webinar at: https://www3.gotomeeting.com/register/334111822.

Lake County Stormwater Management Commission will once again be preparing an application to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (Illinois EPA) for Clean Water Act Section 319(h) grant funds to support implementation of watershed best management practices (BMPs) that are identified in or supported by an existing watershed-based plan or total maximum daily load (TMDL) implementation plan. They are now seeking proposals from local project sponsors who would like to have their projects included in the this grant application. This Countywide Watershed BMP Implementation Program is intended to provide up to 50% grant funding to support watershed protection and restoration projects that prevent, eliminate, or reduce water quality impairments caused by nonpoint source (NPS) pollution. Eligible areas of Lake County include watersheds that already (or soon will) have a watershed-based plan or TMDL implementation plan. Areas of northern Cook County that share a watershed-based or TMDL plan with Lake County are also eligible to apply.

Project pre-proposals must be submitted to SMC by 4 PM May 25th.

At minimum, the initial pre-proposal due on May 25th must include the conceptual scope for a project and a budget estimate for the proposed work. Please contact an SMC staff member listed below if you have questions about a project idea or if you are a “first-timer” and need some assistance converting your project idea into a project scope and budget. The Request for Project Proposals contains instructions for the preparation and submittal of a project proposal to SMC for possible inclusion in the Countywide Watershed BMP Implementation Program and the grant application that will be submitted by SMC to the Illinois EPA later this year. A schedule for the submittal of project proposals and the preparation of the grant application is included below.

Don’t be intimidated by the length of the document; it is 15 pages long, but contains a significant amount of guidance to assist you in the preparation of a project proposal. If you need assistance in interpreting the document or have any questions about the Countywide Watershed BMP Implementation Program, contact Andrea Cline (for projects in the North Branch Chicago River Watershed) at (847) 377-7710 or acline@lakecountyil.gov or Patty Werner at (847) 377-7717 or pwerner@lakecountyil.gov.

MPC’s Tim Grzesiakowski will be a featured speaker.

May 17, 2012, 8 am–5:30 pm

College of Lake County, 19351 West Washington Street, Grayslake, IL

County Green 2012 will bring together local business owners and educators, as well as non-profit, municipal and county leaders for a one-day event sponsored by the College of Lake County to promote a sustainable future in Lake County.

This one day event will focus on the environmental, social and economic impacts of water and food on our region. With Lake County’s population expected to grow significantly by 2050, demand for water and nutritious food will continue to surge. Through speakers and workshops, County Green will connect the dots between our water and food supply, the increasing demands we face and what needs to be done to ensure a sustainable future.

Keynote speaker Peter Annin, author of the “Great Lakes Water Wars,” will shine a spotlight on the importance of water, as will presentations by organizations involved in protecting water and growing local food in Lake County. The afternoon sessions include a water forum and food forum, giving conference participants an opportunity to delve deeper into sustainable local food and pressing water issues.

The County Green is designed to attract businesses that want to “go green,” along with educators, those working with non-profits and municipalities and others interested in sustainability. It will bring together around 200 attendees plus 50 speakers and exhibitors to learn, network, share information and be inspired by the opportunities the new green economy will provide. The County Green is the latest in a series of events held at CLC, beginning with GreenTown: The Future of Community in 2010 and The County Green in May 2011.

FEATURING

Will Allen
Director of Strategic Conservation, The Conservation Fund

Project Description

Since 2008, The Delta Institute has facilitated a Transportation and Environmental Collaboration Initiative in McHenry County, IL (working with local partners McHenry County Defenders and The Land Conservancy of McHenry County) and in Northwest Indiana (working with local partners Shirley Heinz Land Trust and Save the Dunes). The primary goal of the Initiative is to strengthen relationships between environmentalists and transportation professionals to ensure a balanced and informed dialogue between both groups. Through the Chicago Wilderness Sustainability team and working with local partners, Delta has developed local stakeholder groups, hosted a series of educational workshops, developed consensus-driven natural resource prioritization maps, and developed and implemented an outreach plan grounded in the work of those local stakeholder groups.

Join Dr. Nicholas Ashbolt from the US EPA’s Office of Research and Development on May 15 from Noon-1pm for a lunchtime talk entitled “Which Pathogens are in EPA’s New Water Sustainability Focus?” at the UIC School of Public Health West (2121 W. Taylor, Rm 119), as part of the UIC Area of Excellence in Water, Policy, and Health Seminar Series.

Abstract: The NRC 2011 book on ‘Sustainability within the U.S. EPA’ sets out the new system-based focus for the Agency; in essence presenting the need to simultaneously address the interactions between societal, environmental and economic aspects when finding solutions to environmental health issues. Within the water sector, the Office of Research and Development has initiated a transdisciplinary program for water resources, in which Dr. Ashbolt leads Project 5.1 – Tools and metrics for the next generation of water services. Dr. Ashbolt will provide the compelling case for why different water service systems to the single, centralized one of today are required to provide for more sustainable water use within metropolitan regions of the US, and globally. In particular, the need for integrated resource (energy, nutrients and water) recovery. He will focus on water-based pathogen control and how we have moved from a fecal contamination impacted society to one now dominated by environmental, water-based pathogens that are largely unregulated and not controlled. Importantly, what are the new pathogen risks if we do change our water service infrastructure?
